About Challenger

The Challenger Division of Benicia Little League is designed for children with special needs. Any child that faces mental or physical challenges that would keep them from participating in a typical sports program, ages 5 through 21 (or still attending school), is eligible. The program is free of charge.

Challenger teams may include those who have:

  • Impaired vision, hearing or mobility
  • Autism, down syndrome, mental retardation or developmental delays
  • Cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy or other physical handicaps
  • Attention Deficit Disorder or related attention / focus challenges

Teams meet at Ribiero field once a week, on Saturdays, to play. They will play the same team each week, which will also be comprised of special needs athletes. The length of game, style of play and game rules are tailored to the players. There are no outs! All players will have the opportunity to come into home! Volunteer parents manage and coach the teams and typical peers from Benicia Little League’s majors division volunteer to assist the players.
